bowling for columbine
form BFC is a documumentary film which is an unusual form for a documentary.
purpose the purpose of bowling for columbine is to make a profit and to persuade the audience of michael moore's point of view. If moore had made a tv documentary it would have had to be sold to a tv channel, limiting his profits. Unlike a tv programme, there is no interruption from adverts, so the audience are entirely focused on the film, with no distractions.
tone Tone is created by word choice, dialogue, narration, non diegetic soundtrack, camera shots, captions, lighting, technical and cultural codes. In the opening scene of BFC the tone is informal and humourous. This tone is created by the use of non-diegetic patriotic music which we realise, is ironic as Michael Moore begins to critisize America with such things as 'The President bombed another country he couldn't pronounce the name of...' which mocks America for violence and ignorance. The bikini girl posing with the gun carries on this idea and suggests that America sexualises violence. There is then a dissolve transition to the image of the Statue of Liberty. The position of the woman and statue seem to be similiar , so she seems to become the statue (graphic match). The tone of the montage scene is a solemn one. The font of the captions is old-fashioned and matches that of a formal document, creating a serious and formal tone. The non diegetic music creates an ironic undertone to get an emotional response. The music changes at the end to diegetic to create a bigger dramatic effect for the audience; contributes to gravitas of scene. Any light-heartedness is removed by final section as the footage of 9/11 is too serious to joke about.
genre genre markers facts/statistics- when moore shows the number of gun-related deaths in various countries including america. voice-over- moore narrates sections of the film incuding the opening sequence when he tries to gain the audiences trust. narrator/presenter- moore narrates and presents the entire film he uses casual dress and informal language to create a presenting technique that will appeal to his target audience. elements of real life- columbine high school footage, to make it more believable to the audience, so they beleive everything else in the film.
institutions internal institutions-michael moore the production company 'Dog Eat Dog' is owned by michael moore. he is the writer, director, producer of BFC, so there is no one else o question his ideas. he is in charge of everything regarding funding. the budget of BFC was $4 million.
moore's authorial stamp 1.'ordinary guy' persona- created here by the use of plain clothing such as the baseball cap, plain baggy t-shirt, scruffy beard, hair and informal language such as 'kinda dangerous'. 2. use of montage- montage of all the tragedies that America has been inolved in in some way or other, opening scene. 3. ambushing authority figures- when moore jumps out on dick clark as he gets into his car, turns up at K-mart with columbine victims.
external institutions-the law film makers must be careful what they say so they can avoid being sued for libel. examples of where moore avoids saying something controversial is when he uses rhetorical questions or sarcastic comments. e.g -cartoon implies that there is a link between the NRA and the KKK -'isn't a little dangerous keeping guns in a bank?' -moore gives an additional ridiculous idea for why the columbine crimes were committed instead of saying that the people who blame marilyn manson are ridiculous.
modes 1.expository the film maker creates a strong preffered reading by directly addressing the audience. it often uses the voice-of-god narration or captions over a montage or edit of images. e.g- michael moore narrates over a series of images in the opening scene to try and gain the audiences trust.
2.observational this mode appears to let the audience make up their own mind through a fly on the wall experience. this mode lays claim to presenting some kind of ultimate truth. e.g- we see the news reader being very insensitive about the school shooting, moaning about his hairspray and technical difficulties, however this may have been edited to put a negative slant on the media.
3.interactive this is created when we see the fil maker interact with their subject. e.g-when moore ambushes dick clark while he is getting into his car, dick shuts the door on moore and drives away, making him look bad and insensitive or guilty because he doesnt want to answer the questions.
4. reflexive when the film maker draws attention to the means of production. e.g- when moore visits kmart the first thing we see is a shot of the dashborad of a car then he steps out and too much light gets into the lese of the camera. this 'spoiled footage' was kept in to make it seem spontaneous and more likely for the audience to believe if it looks unrehearsed.
5.Performative this is the most creative mode e.g moores made up 'corporate cops' show.
Representations Moore- ordinary guy persona-overweight, baseball cap, scruffy beard, plain t-shirt, informal language such as 'kinda' 'pretty much' america- gun-nuts, racist and paranoid- marilyn manson interview talking about fear. gun users-crazy-interview with james nichols. canada- reasonable, sensible- interviews with canadians, opening canadians unlocked doors. the media-heartless, insensitive-newsreader moaning about hairspray while young girl has just been shot. charlton heston-heartless, insensitive- when being interviewed we see heston stand up and walk away.
Narrative codes binary oppositions Gun opponents vs NRA Michael vs Charlton Rational vs irrational victims of gun crime vs charlton heston
enigma codes why is gun crime so high in america? why does canada not have the same problem? what causes school shootings? will K-mart take away the bullets? what does bowling have to do with gun crime? will the NRA ever accept they are in the wrong?how will heston react to having his views challenged? .....

Narrative Structure
- Begins and ends with a kind of equilibrium – almost like a classical narrative structure, but not quite typical todorovian narrative structure - Sets up binary opposition at the start of Heston vs. Moore, we know the climax of the film is going to be their eventual showdown - Series of enigma codes and questions that he either answers or doesn’t answer in order further his point/argument.
Typical day in America Bank Michigan youth Michigan militia Oklahoma City Bombings Columbine – Lockheed manufacturer Montage of American military interventions Columbine High School Massacre footage, then NRA rally Why are American kids so violent? Marilyn Manson interview Statistics about gun crime Cartoon about American History Climate of Fear: Africanised Bees, police racism, demonisation of black males etc (add this to representation of racism) Canada Kayla Welfare to Work/Poverty K Mart Heston Interview Ending
Why structured in this way? Always to further his argument/persuade the audience The ending that echoes the start may be to make people feel angry and encourage the audience to take action.

New Kids on the Block is my favourite band of 90s. NKOTB had so many hits! The ones I remember are 'Tonight', 'Baby, I Believe In You' and, of course their hit 'Step By Step'. These are real songs, not garbage like today! And it is awesome they have a tour in 2019! So I'm going to attend their concert in 2019. The concert setlist is here: New Kids on the Block tour Sacramento. Check it out and maybe we can even visit one of the performances together!
