Rumours about Gatsby (page 29)
'Somebody told me they thought he killed a man once' 'I don't think its so much that...its more that he was a German spy during the war.' 'I heard that from a man who knew all about him, grew up with him in Germany.' This shows that no one actually knows anything about Gatsby, or knows exactly who he is and it also shows he is a bit of a mysterious character, a bit like a celebrity because of all these rumours.

"This fella's a real Belasco". David Belasco was a broadway theatre producer and he was known for the realism of his sets. This shows that Gatsby's parties are one big show, also that his house is new, it wasn't passed down, meaning he is from new money - not from old money.

"I hope she’ll be a fool—that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool." Daisy speaks these words in Chapter 1 as she describes to Nick and Jordan her hopes for her infant daughter. While not directly relevant to the novel’s main themes, this quote offers a revealing glimpse into Daisy’s character. Daisy is not a fool herself but is the product of a social environment that, to a great extent, does not value intelligence in women. Daisy’s remark is somewhat complacent, while she refers to the social values of her era, she does not seem to challenge them. Instead, she describes her own boredom with life and seems to imply that a girl can have more fun if she is beautiful and simplistic. Daisy herself often tries to act such a part. She tries to conform to what she thinks Tom would like for a wife but this just shows her undying love for Gatsby.

"my family all died" this makes us suspicious of Gatsby's origins as it seems cliche

'He took out a pile of shirts and began throwing them'. This shows us that Gatsby is trying to impress and show off to Daisy by carelessly throwing his expensive shirts around and that the shirts are clearly worthless to him.

"One thing's sure and nothing's surer The rich get richer and the poor get - children. In the meantime, In between time -" Is a song one of Gatsby's servants plays. It shows in this time the rich get all the benefits and that there is a large divide in social class between upper class and lower class people.

"he want to know...if you'll invite Daisy to your house some afternoon and let him come over" - Gatsby wants Nick to invite Daisy for tea, so Gatsby can come over, his house will be in full view giving Gatsby the opportunity to show it off and show how wealthy he is.

'his head leaned back so far that it rested against the face of a defunct mantlepeice clock' (page 55) this shows that Gatsby has no concept of time in his life,he has a fear of his dreams being shattered but he doesn't have a care for time when it comes to daisy and his love for her.
