"My wife will never die for me! I will bring your guts into your mouth but that goodness will not die for me!" This shows John guilt towards his actions which caused Elizabeth to be imprisioned. He is prepared to do anything, even if it ruins his name and reputation, to save her.

"I like not the smell of this 'authority' " shows his refusal to accept Parris's authority as he doesn't believe Parris is a good minister

"My wife will never die for me! I will bring your guts into your mouth but that goodness will not die for me!" This emphasises John's feeling of anger and very strong feeling of guilt as he is saying Elizabeth will not die for his actions. i.e his affair with Abigail.

"I may speak my heart, I think!"
This shows that John is a very honest man and speaks only the truth! However we know this is not true as he has had an affair with wee Abby.

"it's winter in here yet" This enforces the fact that John and Elizabeth are not the same as they once were after the affair and that their relationship has grew to be very cold and dull.

"But I will cut off my hand before I'll ever reach for you again." This shows Johns great regret for the crime he has commited with Abigail, and that he wants to be a better person now, a changed man, as he tries very hard to make Elizabeth happy as he knows he has done great wrong and if it was found out it would blacking his name

"Were I stone I would have cracked for shame this seven month!" shows John is being open about his guilt towards the affair and how he regrets it and really wants Elizabeth to be happy with him.

“Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut of my hand before I ever reach for you again. Wipe it out of mind. We never touched, Abby.”
This quote shows how John utterly regrets the affair and wish that it did not happen so in turn he does not have to deal with the ramifications of his actions. Also, has a violent connotation which implies violence is yet to come (foreshadowing) later in the play. This is a manifestation of John guilt and utter contempt at his actions.

"If the crop is good i'll buy George Jacob's heifer." Shows that John is trying very hard to win back his wife by buying her a 'romantic' gift. this also emphasis John's guilt as he is trying to get back in his wife's good books after cheating in her with Abigail

Kate' s quote:
"My wife will never die for me!"
This shows he loves his wife Elizabeth. It also shows that he is a very strong willed character. He won't let what he has done kill his wife.
