1. “Bent double like old beggars under sacks” it’s effective because it shows us how tired they were when they were young. 2. “coughing like hags” it describes how the soldiers health was in the concisions they were in. 3. “cursed through sludge” it makes them sound like they are cursing under their breath. 4. “Men marched asleep” He uses a metaphor affectively to show how tired they are. 5. It makes the soldiers sound injured and lost a lot of blood. 6. “deaf even to the hoot” shows they couldn’t hear even to the hoots. 7. He put explanation marks and capital letters. 8. “flound’ring like a man in fire or lime” it states what is happening to some of the soldiers and how they died. 9. It builds up a pitcher of what is happening to the soldiers and it emphasises the horror of the men’s suffering.

1."as under a green sea, i saw him drowning" is a simile and it tells us that the smoke was like being in the sea and the man looked like he was drowning when he was choking. 2."gargling" is onomatapoeia and it tells us that he has a liquid at the back of his throat. 3."drowning" is onomatapoeia and it is to say he is being killed by the gas as if he was drowning. 4."plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning" is repitition and is to say that he is throwing himself at the writer and that he is dying sa he chokes on the gas.

Dulce et Decorum Est was written by Wilfered Owen a young officer how died during the last few days of the first world war. Othouw he was brave and patriotic, he disapproved of the way the government was sending out young men to almost serine death a bloody and horrible death, as described in the poem. The latten title comes from the saying Dulce et Decorum Est Pro patria mori. It means “It is sweet and noble to die for one’s country” Owen is using the cotashon ironically he dosenot beleve it is sweet and noble to die like this. In fact at the end of the poem he calls it a lie.

1.'like old beggars under sacks' It is a similie and empahsies that the soldiers look old and not very mobile and healthy. 2.'coughing like hags' It is a similie and it also emphasies that the young men are coughing like old woman. 3.'sludge' This word shows that the ground is muddy and wet which will be bad conditions for the soldiers. 4.'men marched asleep' The first technique is a metaphor because men cant literally march asleep, the secondtechnique is alleteration because the 2 words sound the same 'men marched' 5.'blood shod' Is unusuall because it shows that the soldiers are injured and shedding blood. 6.'deaf even to the hoots'is a metaphor because you cant be deaf to the hoots. This is effective because it shows how unresponsive and stupid the soldiers have become. 7. He uses the short sentence technique. 8.'floundering like a man in fire or lime' It shows that the man is panicking about not get his helmet on. 9.'guttering, choking, drowning' is using the 'ing' words effectively because it puts a grusome picture in your head about the man. 10.'his hanging face like a devils sick of sin' The comarision is that his face was like the devil but sick of sins so that is going to be a pretty terryfing face. 11.One comaparision could be that the blood is 'gargling' from his lungs, that would be a horrible sight to see. 12.He is ironikally saying that it is alie that it is sweet and noble to die for your country, so ultimitally he does not believe that phrase.

::)Dulce et Decorum est.; textual analysis questions ::)
1."bent double, like old beggars under sacks” this is discribing/compeing the men to dirty old homeless people. It gives us an image. 2."Knock-kneed, coughing like old hags" it makes the men sound old and ill and they are supposed to be young and fit. "Knock-kneed" would suggest that they have been sitting for a very long period of time. 3."Cursed through the sludge" it emphasise how they were feeling, they were cursing (swearing) as if they were annoyed. 4."men marched asleep" it is a metopher and allitaration. it suggests they were sleep walking but they really were not. 5. "blood shod" it suggetes the men were injerd or almost out of blood. 6. "blood shod"they are out of blood. 7. capital letters in "gas" and exlamation marks. 8. "floundering like a man in fire or lime" for ther fact it sounds like he is burning or stuggling.

Dulce et Decorum est
Words that may be to do with water in the poem
Under a green sea is a metaphor it show what happens to the people as they walk past the gas attack with no masks on it s also compared to the ocean
Drowning( choking, drowning and guttering ) is repetition of the ing sound it also shows that people are dieing all round them
Froth, sludge and misty shows the conditions the soldiers have to walk through to progress to get further on and they need to get through

1. A quote that describes the soldiers in the first line of the poem is "bent double ,like old beggers under sacks" This is an effective simile because it gives you an image of old, dirty worn out men when they should really be young and healthy.
2.another comparison in line 2 in the poem is "knock-kneed, coughing like hags"this simile adds to the description of the soldiers by making them sound old, crooked and ill which you do not expect from young soldiers.
3.the poet uses the word "coughing" to emphasise these pictures. you can almost these pictures. you can almost hear the soldiers.
4.the sentance "men marched asleep"is an important sentance because the poet uses metophor and alliteration to show that theyare exhausted and deprived of sleep.
5.the poet uses unusual word choice with the term "blood shod" in line 6. the word choice makes us think that their feet are bruised, battered and bloody.
