1. "Like old beggars under sacks". This shows us that they are old looking and look like beggers on the street because of their clothes are worn out. 2. "coughing like hags". This shows that they are like old men coughing like old women. 3. "cursed through the sludge". This shows how they walked through the sludge. 4. The word choice is very different here because they say they were "marching asleep", but you cant march asleep so it showed how tired they were. This is also a metaphor. 5. This sounds like they are injured or weak. 6. "Deaf even to the hoots". This is a metaphor because you cant be deaf to the hoots. 7. He uses short sentences and exclamation marks to make it stand out. 8. The quote is "flound'ring like a man in fire or lime" like the soldior was surrounded by gas. 9. "Guttering, chocking, drowning", Gives you an idea on how bad it was. 10. "Devils sick of sin", it gives you an idea of the mans face being grotesque. 11. Hi all, remember that when describing a simile, metaphor or other comparison, you need to use the JUST AS________, SO __________ formula. This appplies to writing about class texts as well as in Close Reading.
EXAMPLE: JUST AS hags are old, feeble, ugly and weak, SO the men are deformed, unhealthy and less manly due to their experiences of war.

'coughing like hags' is a simile, it is effective because instead of the men being young and healthy they are compared to old ladies.
'blood-shod' shows us that the soilders are injured and weak.
'helpless sight' suggests they cant see what is infront of them, it is personification.
'incurable sores on innocent tongues' is personification, this is effective because it suggests they have been poiosned.
'obscene as cancer' is a simile, it is effective because it suggests that their injuries are as bad as cancer itself.

1. Bent double, like old beggars under sacks, it shows you that they are getting compared to homeless peopleliving on the streets. 2. Knock Kneed, coughing like old hags is another comparison to the soldiers because they are being compared to old people coughing. 3. Cursed through sludge is an expression which uses a sound effect. 4. Men marched asleep is an important sentence because it sounds like they were motionless and they were like zombies. 5. Blood shod makes it soun like they lost lots of blood. 9. It is to give an image in your head to shown you how bad and grewsome those kind of men were actually in. 10. His hanging face like a devils sick of sin the effect is that(grotesque). 11. The froth corrupted lungs, the froth gargling. 12.He thinks it is very wrong that the people in Britain were getting lied to.

Dulce et Decorum Est1. 'Bend double like old beggers under sacks' is a similie which derscribs the soliders were living like dirty homeless people. 2. 'Knock-kneed,coughing like hags' is another similie which gives you the inpretion the soliders are really old and very ill. Knock-kneed suggests thet they have beensitting for a long time which means they must have been cold and possibily wet. 3. 'Cursed through sludge' it emphasie the men on how they were feeling and also emphasies effective word choice as Willfrid Owen could have used a different word, cursed makes them sound tierd. 4. Men marched asleep is using a metopher and also alliteration. it emphasies how tierd the soilders were. 5. Blood shod suggets the men were injerd. 6. Flound'ring like a man in fire or lime for the fact it sounds like he is burning or struggling to breath because of this gas attack. 7. Face like devils sick of sin is a metaphore it is compering a devil to a bad life in the front line like the soilders. 8. bitter is another effective word choice because Wilfred Owen could have just say they were cold. 9. The title Dulce et Decorum Est was used ironicly as Wilfred Owen thinks it is a lie as the saying Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori means its sweet and noble to die for ones counry.
