Against the odds
It was a new day, but no ordinary day; this was the day John was going to the international children’s games. John was competing in the volleyball event and had been waiting for months for this day, and it was a lovely day as well. The sun was shining, birds were singing and his mum was groaning, “Yer sausage rolls are ready.” John was the typical teenager: long hair, laidback and very lazy. It was an effort for him to even make his bed in the morning, never mind his own breakfast.
After scoffing his sausage rolls slowly, it was time to go. Dread had filled his body, even fear. The thought of going to Lanarkshire with thousands of people he didn’t know frightened him. Luckily for him 7 other people from his team got picked; Craig ‘ the tall’ one, Jonny ‘the confused’ one, Jordan ‘the hairy’ one, Michael ‘the small’ one, Chris ‘the funny’ one, Connell ‘the quiet’ one and finally Euan ‘the annoying’ one. “ Right, are you ready to go.” Shouted his mum. “Possibly.” Said John sarcastically. “Let’s go.”
The group of participants’ from Edinburgh had to meet up in Clermiston, where they’d be picked up and sent to Lanarkshire by coach. By the time John had arrived every boy was talking about one thing. Even if they didn’t know each other the chat was about ‘fit’ girls. “I heard the girls from L.A are fit,” fired out Jonny. He was immediately followed by a “ Oh aye” from the rest of the boys. The only new boys to the group were Jamie and Ben who were both competing in Athletics. Jamie was tall and ginger whereas Ben was the average height for a 15 year old and had brown hair. Suddenly the coach and everyone dimbed down, the thought of winning crossed everyone’s mind, and why not, they were all excellent athletes.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, appeared a small woman. She had long brown hair and was wearing a light blue jumper with a label on it saying ‘Edinburgh leader’ “Hiya, my name is Sheilagh Smith, I’m going to be Edinburgh’s team leader and I’ll make sure everyone is in the right place at the right time.” She looked the cheerful type, constantly smiling when she was speaking. “Any questions?” “ Aye, when do we get to leave?” mumbled Michael. “Someone’s keen,” chuckled Sheilagh. “Emm, I think we could get on the coach now if you want.” All of a sudden everyone who was playing volleyball ran to get on the coach. It was fair to say that the volleyball group were all excited, like 5 year olds in a sweet shop.
Once everyone was on the coach the driver started to drive, as he would. The front of the bus was empty besides the coaches. All the kids wanted to sit up at the back. Sheilagh stood up at the front of the bus and shouted. “Right, the driver says we are going to arrive at the accommodation in roughly an hour. We will have a team meeting just as we get in, then you can go find your rooms, they should have Edinburgh signed posted on a door.” The rest of the bus trip was relatively quiet. The coach of the volleyball came up to the back of the bus and told the boys who they would be playing. Unluckily for the boys, they had been drawn into a group with Hungary, Canada and Lanarkshire. Lanarkshire had been their rivals for ages now, and they always finished on top winning 6 of the last 8 games we had played them. It was clear they were never going to win, all they wanted to do was beat Lanarkshire. That would be better than winning the competition for them.
They arrived at their accommodation quicker than the bus driver had thought, It was a huge school were they where staying. Everyone jumped off the bus and the sun was beaming down on them. Loads of other people from different countries were arriving as well. “This place looks not to bad.” Said John enthuastically. Everyone else nodded. They all walked towards the buildings. It was big and wonderful the closer they got. “Right guys, I’m going to make this short and simple,” said sheilagh before we walked in.” I don’t want any of use getting into trouble, don’t want any boys going into the girl’s rooms! And most importantly have a good time and make new friends!” No one really listened to sheilagh, but they all waited until she had finished then ran inside. Immediately everyone was talking to all the other folk.

Another day had awakened. It was yet again, a beautiful summer’s day. It was around 7 o’clock and everything was quiet and peaceful. Everything except the volleyball venue at Wishaw’s sport centre. A crowd of around 200 people came to witness world class volleyball. The first game was Edinburgh against the Canadian side, Brantford, and what an opener it was. Both teams giving it their all and not going down without a fight. It was a really close match, evenly thought out however Brantford went on to win 2-1.
All the Edinburgh boys were gutted and speechless. They all staggered away slowly into the changing room, without a word. Once they were all in Craig groaned, “ We should have won!” “ It’s a bummer,” replied John.” But we need to focus on our other games and try get into the semi’s, we can do this.” Suddenly everyone looked like they were pumped up and ready to go out and play the other games. There were a couple to go, before they where back on back to back games against the Hungarian side an Lanarkshire.
The Edinburgh boys went back through the hall to watch the other games. There was a couple of thrillers, especially the Korean side versus the Slovenian. These teams were much better than the rest and after a highly competed match, the Koreans won.
Soon enough, Edinburgh were back one against the Hungarian side. This game had fans off their seats and was one of the ‘jaw-dropping’ games of the tourament. Edinburgh has won the first set and were closing in to winning the second when all of a sudden, John dived for a ball and burned all his right side. There was no doubt about it he had to be subbed off but he was the only player in that team who played the position. Their was a panic across the team as they had to make do with an power hitter playing setter. With a little bit of luck Edinburgh went on to win the second set, just.
The team did not celebrate after winning the match though, but they all ran over to see if John was okay, and if he would be able to make the game against Lanarkshire. “I…I Can’t i-it hurts too much.” Whined John. “But we need you, no one else can play your position.” Moaned the rest of the team. “Let euan play, I’m sure he’ll do a good job.” Everyone looked at John in disgust as euan wasn’t exactly the best of players. “Th-thanks John.” Stuttered Euan. “Now go out there and win that game!” Shouted John.
The team had no time to rest, and where immediately back on court. The crowd roared like they had never done before when both Edinburgh and Lanarkshire walked on court. Lanarkshire where all araggent and confident about winning, whereas Edinburgh where all quiet on court. Lanarkshire started with the ball and won the first three points in a flash. Everyone from Edinburgh looked at each other and euan shouted, “ Not again, we can do this!” This got inspiration into the team and after a few good hits, they went on to win the set 25-9. Set two was a completely different story and Lanarkshire started to play out of their skins and Edinburgh were no match for them. Lanarkshire thought they had the set in the bag and made a few substitutions which was a bad idea as Edinburgh then found rhythm and went on to bring the game to 23-23. Euan was to serve, but nerves had got all over him. He striked the ball and hit it with such power, their defence couldn’t do anything about it. It was now match point and the only thing stopping us from winning it was his nerves. Everyone shouted “ ONE MORE TO GO!” Euan started to shake vigorously. He had no self confidence. He went to hit the ball, but this time with no power. As the ball flew across the air, the crowd stood on their feet roaring as loud as ever. The ball had hit the net but was balancing on top of it, the Lanarkshire team thought they had won the point and went away to celebrate, but all of a sudden the ball dropped, but not on Edinburgh’s side of the net. Everyone started cheering ( except the Lanarkshire fans). They had won! Against there biggest rivals! Even better, they got into the semi’s! All against the odds!
