The two mini essay plans that we gave out in class.
2009 Q3: Scene which significantly changes view of character.
How does scene prompt this and discuss how important to understanding of character in play as whole
LOA: JP a character struggling with his own sense of integrity: has committed adultery but hidden due to fear of losing reputation. In Act 3 chooses to tell the truth to save Elizabeth, a sacrifice which helps him to recover his integrity and have courage to go to his death in Act 4 rather than make a false confession. Connection to Miller’s central theme.
1. Conflict in JP in Acts 1 and 2: public reputation vs private shame at having sinned against own morals and Elizabeth.
2. When E charged, finally decides he must tell the truth to save her – sacrifice. Leads to Act 3: J’s confession a turning point for him. Confirms him as selfless, courageous in standing up against the witchcraft trials, maintaining integrity under pressure.
3. Act 4: John’s actions lead to his marriage being repaired and give him the courage to make his final sacrifice: giving up his life rather than make a false confession. In doing so redeems himself as a man of integrity.
2010 Q4: Tension building to a climax
How tension created and thematic as well as dramatic significance
LOA: Act 3 in the courtroom is scene in which tension builds to a climax. Tension comes from uncertainty over whether truth will prevail over lies, connecting to Miller’s central theme of integrity. JP must convince the court of the truth, thus exposing the liars and ending the witchcraft trials. In doing so he will also redeem himself as a man of integrity.
1. Conflict in JP in Acts 1 and 2: public reputation vs private shame. When E charged and he’s directly affected by witchcraft accusations, knows he must confess to adultery to save her
2. Tension in Act 3: Mary, Abigail, John’s confession, E lies, Hale, Mary accuses him, John rages against lies of trials. Although court does not see the truth at this point, scene is turning point in JP’s character: demonstrated his integrity in standing by truth
3. Consequences of Act 3: John has courage to refuse to make false confession and go to his death as a man of integrity. Truth victorious over lies at end.
