The Crucible
Choose from a play in an important scene in which tension is skilfully created. Briefly explain why the scene is important to the play as a whole and go on to discuss how the writer creates tension in the scene.
Introduction- repeat the question...
Paragraph 1: Mary Warren testifies against Abigail
TPS: Miller creates tension in act 3 when Mary Warren must testify against Abigail but finds it difficult so Proctor must speak for her.
Proctor: She never saw no spirits sir.
Proctor: And she declares her friends are lying now.
Mary Warren: I cannot lie no more. I am with God, I am with God.
Paragraph 2: Giles Corey is arrested for contempt in court.
TPS: More tension is added by Arthur Miller when we see that Giles Corey is arrested for contempt in court as he wont reveal the name of his witness.
Danforth: I have no choice but to arrest you for contempt of this court.
Giles: You know I never hired a lawyer in my life.
Paragraph 3: Elizabeth lies about Proctors affair with Abigail.
TPS – Miller increases the tension when all other evidence fails and Proctor has to admit to lecher,
but Elizabeth fails to coincide with his plea and lies about all the knowledge of the affair.
Elizabeth: “ My husband is a good and righteous man”
Proctor: “She only thought to save my name!”
Paragraph 4: Proctor ‘admits’ to witchcraft (Chaos)
TPS – Through act 3 Arthur Miller continually increases the tension leading up to the main event of
Proctors supposed confession to witchcraft, which causes complete chaos within the other characters.
Proctor: “ you are pulling down heaven and raising up a whore”
Proctor: “ God damns our kind, especially, and we will burn we will burn together!”
Proctor: “ I say- I say – God is dead!”
