2011 8. Choose a novel in which the narrative point of view is a significant feature in your appreciation of the text. Show how the writer’s use of this feature enhances your understanding of central concern(s) of the text. Introduction: Refer to “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Introduce the question. Brief detail on the novel itself (1920’s, old & new money etc) Summarise what you’re going to write about.
Paragraph 1:
TS: Fitzgerald introduces us to the narrator of the “The Great Gatsby”, Nick Carraway , in the opening chapter. It is here that we understand he will be a neutral side in the novel and will allow us to experience all areas of American society. “Before you feel like criticising anyone just remember that not all the people in this world have had the advantages that you’ve had.” “Inclined to reserve judgement. “ “Wild unknown men.” - He will not judge and will tolerate and try to understand all aspects of society. It also shows the importance of being in touch with your family and allowing them to guide you in life – something that Gatsby will not allow.
Paragraph 2:
TS: Nick Carraway observes the upper class in East Egg through Tom Buchanan and the aristocracy and he compares it to the middle class in West Egg through Gatsby. “factual imitation of some hotel de Ville in Normandy.” “thin beard of ivy.” “Georgian Colonial mansions. “ “Two arrogant eyes.” “Just because I’m stronger and more of a man than you.” - The difference in appearances shows the differences in people who live there. Tom repeats facts from a book he is reading “Rise of the Coloured Empires” a subject he believes to be a current topic and instead of seeming intelligent he seems arrogant. His views are dated in reality and this shows as they have inherited their money they have also inherited their views.
Paragraph 3: TS: Through Nick’s observations of the poorer people in society and his lack of condemnation and hate we see the lives lives by those in the Valley of Ashes. “A fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens.” “Ash grey men.” “Grey cars.” “Grey land.” -Shows the lifeless & miserable nature of those who live there. Ashes – death decay. This is a wasteland as a result of their growing industries and prosperity.
Paragraph 4: TS: Nick’s presence in chapter 7 allows the immortality and hypocrisy of the upper class to be known due to the confrontation between Gatsby and Tom Buchanan. “Unless you brought the groceries to the back door!” “Mr Nobody from Nowhere.” “Tell him the truth – that you never loved him!” Tom demolishes Gatsby’s dreams and although he admits going off on a “spree” he always returns to Daisy as he loves her. He is a hypocrite as he uses Myrtle and does not think badly of his affair but only Daisy’s.
Paragraph 5: TS: Nick’s ability to reserve judgement has led to him being the only friend of Gatsby which allows Fitzgerald to convey the corruption in society – the loss of care. “Can’t repeat the past? Why of course you can!” “Yellowing trees.” “The holocaust was complete.” “Failure of a house.” “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne ceaselessly into the past.” - Very few turned up to the funeral emphasising the self-indulgence of the “nouveau riche” that all the parties were for their own enjoyment and none of them cared about who he was and did not bother to know the host.
Conclusion: Sum up the main ideas. Answer the question. Finish the analysis of the text.
