Crucible Essay Plan – ‘A Change in Proctor’
Para 1:
Topic Sentence: Miller shows a change in Proctor’s life as he tries to make up for the wrong he has done to his wife Elizabeth after committing adultery.
Quote 1: Abigail (to Proctor): ‘You loved me then and you do now!’
Explain: Shows the relationship that Proctor and Abigail use to have, Proctor use to like her but now has become a one sided thing, Abigail is pushing to get him back.
Quote 2: Abigail (to Proctor): ‘I saw your face when she put me out’
Explain: Elizabeth fired Abigail. Abigail is trying to convince herself that Proctor still loves her even though deep down she knows he doesn’t.
Quote 3: Proctor: ‘No. No, Abby. That’s done with.’
Explain: Proctor is trying to tell Abigail that it is over between them. ‘Abby’ shows informal, more of a relationship than servant and master.
Para 2:
Topic Sentence: Miller shows the effect of Proctor’s betrayal to Elizabeth by portraying the coldness and distance in their marriage.
Quote 1: Proctor: ‘It’s winter in here yet’
Explain: Shows Proctor has identified the coldness of his relationship with his wife. He has had enough and feels Elizabeth should have forgiven him by now.

Explain: She knows that John is keeping something from the court and is trying to convince him to confess as she knows he can stop the witch trials.
Quote 2: Elizabeth: ‘She wants me dead John. You know it.’
Explain: Shows how Elizabeth and Abigail feel about each other. Elizabeth knows that Abigail has the power to have her killed.

Explain: He signs the confession but isn’t willing for them to hang it up on the church because he will blacken other people’s names. He chooses to die rather than having his name tarnished. He dies for justice and in the end does indeed mount the gibbet like a saint.
