'The king's daughter' - Just as if you were to marry the kings daughter you would become part of the royal family, Gatsby believes if marries Daisy he becomes part of the old money, achieving his dream.
'Voice full of money' - A bizarre pairing, not only rvealing how wellspoken Daisy is but also conveys her wealth and how much Gatsby is attracted to her wealth and social posiiton. wants to be part of the old money.
'An extraodinary gift for hope'- shows Gatsby's enormous capacity to dream, almost mystical. Optimism. Not shown as a negative characteristic.
"It was what foul dust floated in the wake of his dreams that temporarily closed out my interest.' - Just as dust is the ashes of something that was once whole, this is predicting the aftermath of the extreme, unnatural lengths Gatsby went to in order to try to achieve his goals. Shows that his dreams have a great cost to himself and others.
"He was never quite still..." - suggests Gatsby was restless in reaching his goals. Possible dissatisfaction that he has not reached his desires yet. (Better with the green light quotation)
"The colossal significance of that light had now vanished forever." - Shows how as he begins his affair with Daisy and therefore as Gatsby's dream had nearly become reality, he discovers that it was not the glorified version of reality he had imagined. Shows he has almost reached a goal and it has lost its importance.
"His count of enchanted objects had diminished by one."- shows how Daisy has become Gatbsy's but not the warped, perfect version he had created, but the real Daisy who is now married and has a child. Who is not as innocent as her white dress purports.
Gatsby's car and mansion:
"Swollen here and there" - sheer size. Larger than life depiction mirrors the enormity of Gatsby's excess. Only 'here and there' suggests he has not reached his potential yet.
"Green leather conservatory" - an extension to his house. Matches the grandeur and the proportion to its surroundings. Green could symbolise his jealousy towards the old money.
"Factual imitation of a Normandy hotel de ville" - imported. Out of place in its surroundings. Imitation shows how he is mimicing the established aristrocrats in East Egg in order to try to become paart of them.
"Thin beard of ivy" - thin shows he wants to be part of the old money but the small amount of ivy shows it is newly built like his money is newly made. Disguises his house's origins, just as he disguises his past.
Confrontation: Pathetic Fallacy- heat rising mirrors the tension building. Tom makes another reference to inter racial marriage and his apocalyptic vision of society. He sees society spiralling due to a collapse in morality. This highlights Tom's hypocrisy as his own affair is no different to Daisy's and he is also contributing to the breakdown.
Myrtle's death = Death of the American Dream. Breast exposed is relation to the green breast. Irony of cause of death. Automobile is meant to be a symbol of prosperity and social mobility yet it lead to the downfall of someone trying to follow those ideals.
"Holocaust" - complete destruction of Gatsby; his dreams and his life.
"Green breast" - the nurturing of dreams. Somewhere dreams should be allowed to be followed but not in this society as the aristrocrats impose glass ceilings on people trying to follow their dreams. The settlers coming to the New World saw it as a land of endless possibilities, yet now dreams are stifled by the Tom Buchanan's of this world.
"So we beat on, boats against the current. Borne back ceaselessly into the past." - past is the anchor stopping progression towards another dream. Highlights the importance of remembering the past. Life will always prevent the American Dream, therefore it is unreachable.
Motif of T J Eckleburg is an ambiguous message; he could be the judge of character's morality or he could be the materialistic goals people follow to reach wealth.
The clock - Gatsby's desire to stop time and live in the small frame of time in the past with Daisy.
Valley of Ashes:
- Ashes represent decay - the decay of society
- Grey and dreamless people - Show dreaming as a good thing and without dreams people become lifeless (grey)
Mr Wilson - " A bland, spiritless man, anaemic but faintly handsome." - shows he did have dreams but they failed one way or another and he lost faith in following them.
