Here's a short alternative plan for a flawed character question.
Step 1 – what is Gatsby's flaw?
-capacity to dream. Sensitivity to hope. Green light. 'foul dust'.
Step 2 – How does it manifest itself in the early chapters of the novel? Is it not a positive thing?
-the mansion. East vs West. The car - but be aware if you do these things, you're not having to beast them in complete depth. Daisy isn't all he believes her to be.
Step 3 – What are the early signs that this is actually bad?
-He's had to create a new identity for himself and engage in illegal activities.
Step 4 – Gatsby constantly feeds his flaw against reason and good judgement – prove. At what point does Gatsby overreach himself? What issues are raised by this? What consequences does it trigger?
Chapter 7. He finally sees Daisy has a child. Mr Nobody from Nowhere'. We see his proposal just doesn't work with the reality of the situation. Glass ceiling. Flaw causes wreckage of all their lives.
Step 5 – Final impressions of Gatsby versus the rest. What is our final impression of Gatsby and the American Dream he represented? Valley of ashes. Dreams vs Decay. Society just can't deliver on its promises. The Green Breast promises dreams shall flourish, but the reality of the Toms and Daisys stifle all these dreams with their glass ceilings.
Step 6 – Conclusion. Needs to tie up Gatsby's flaw of dreaming excessively to the pursuit of the American Dream. Finish on unpacking the ambiguity in Fitzgerald's view of dreams.

Alot of Copying and Pasting went on there. So what is the essay, we're being timed on, meant to be about? As in, what in particular?

Kellyann,
I've posted the essay question and notes on what each paragraph can include. The essay question is:
Choose a novel in which the main character is a tragic hero.
Explore the extent to which this character’s flaw affects your understanding of the novel’s key concerns.

Quick question, where did Gatsby say he got his money from?

Kellyann,
He became a bootlegger, selling alcohol through his drug stores. He is a self-made man and didn't inherit anything substantial.
Dan Cody's lifestyle gave Gatsby his training.

Both really Kirsty. It's his ability to dream that he takes to excessive lengths and to the point where he's ignoring the reality of the situation.
