Proctor’s Redemption
Step 1 – Feels spectacular guilt over his affair with Abigail- has taken steps to end their relationship
- Feels guilt over collateral damage with relationship with Elizabeth – again takes steps to make this better, But his flaw is that he is a weak character. He cannot forgive himself and is now deeply insecure. Elizabeth understands him and knows that he judges himself too harshly
Quotes – ‘I will cut off my hand before I reach for you again’ – P
‘It is well seasoned’
‘I have gone tip toe round this house the past seventh month’
‘ Elizabeth, your justice would freeze beer’
‘I don’t judge you John; it is the magistrate in your heart that judges you’
Step 2 – Proctor goes to court to take a stand for Elizabeth and hopefully lead to her being freed.
- Step towards becoming a stronger character as he has to stand against the court authority and put himself up as a righteous man.
- The hysteria of the girls and the judge’s lack of belief in his evidence forces Proctor to play the one card he has left, to confess his affair publicly. By confessing his affair, he is damaging his own reputation, but it is for noble reasons and shows Proctor is truly a good man.
‘It is a whore’s vengeance.’
‘I have known her’
‘She thinks to dance with me on my wife’s grave’
‘You’re pulling down heaven and raising up a whore’
‘What man would cast away his good name?’
Step 3 – Even this is not enough and Proctor must make more of a sacrifice to restore his faith in himself and prove his strength of character
- Refuses to sign the confession because it will ruin the reputation of his friends but more importantly, his own reputation
‘I cannot mount the gibbet like a saint; it is fraud, I am not that man.’
‘I am not worth dust on the feet of them that hang.’
- Initially feels unworthy of making a sacrifice that makes him appear noble. He is so consumed by guilt that he cannot believe that he is a good man. He considers himself weak.
- Therefore, by making the decision to rip up his confession and not give them the lie, he is finally showing he believes in himself.

‘He has his goodness now, far be it from me to take it from him’ – Elizabeth
