1. Categories: Purpose (why has it been made?)
Medium (what type of media is used e.g. TV, cinema?)
Tone (Formal, serious, ironic, lighthearted?)
Form (What IS it? An advert? A feature film? A trailer?)
Genre (Horror, Comedy, Action, RomCom... etc?)
2. Representations: How ideas or people are represented in the text. What messages are conveyed about this idea/group of people by the text?
3. Narrative: How the story in the text has been shaped.
4. Todorovian Narrative Structure: Equilibrium, Disruption, Recognition of Disruption, Attempts to Repair it, New Equilibrium.
5. Audience: Who is this text MADE for? Who is the target audience?Be VERY specific and think of several groups of people for each text.
6.Language: The techniques that have been used to make the text i.e. the Cultural Codes and Technical Codes
7. Cultural Codes: Setting, Actions, Dialogue, Props, Costumes, Use of Colour
8. Technical Codes: Use of camera, lighting, sountrack, editing, Use of captions.
9. Institutions: Who made the text and why? What controls have been placed upon it? Internal institutions include: budget, ownership (e.g. of production company, studio) distribution. External institutions include the law, regulatory bodies e.g. Ofcom, BBFC
10. Connotations: The associations of something/what the thing makes you think of. E.g. the connotations of the colour red are: danger, passion, anger etc
11. Polysemy: The existence of several possible meanings in any section of a media text
12. Anchorage: How the film maker uses cultural codes and technical codes to ensure the audience read the text the way he/she wants them to
13. Preferred reading: The meaning accepted by the majority of the audience
