Throughout the novel Holden seeks to protect himself as he feels alone , isolated and depressed. One of the ways he tries to do do this is by wearing his red hunting hat, which reminds him of the colour of his dead brother's hair. Even though he feels comforted and protected by wearing the hat, this is self-isolation. Holden also only speaks to his brother when wearing the hat.
"I felt so depressed, you could imagine what I did, I started taliking to Allie'
Holden's brother reminds him of his happier childhood and an innocent time in his life. His brother died young and was perfect in Holden's eyes. He therefore likes to be reminded of that perfection now that he sees everything else in the world as 'phony'.
Unfortunately for Holden. this self-isolation is causing a mental deterioration. He begins to be so depressed at the state of the world as he sees it, that he develops physical symptoms of his mental illness. Holden frequently passes out, has headaches and feels like he is 'shivering like a bastard'.
