Audience and Narrative Essay
Look out your Godfather NAB essay notes for help with this question!
Intro Text Genre Purpose Narrative Structure Audience (target audience and those who would differentially decode)
Integration: Explain how these two key aspects are linked i.e. these key aspects are integrated because the Hero’s Journey is designed to appeal to audiences. Joseph Cambell’s book The Hero with a Thousand Faces’ showed how stories that have survived throughout history due to their popularity with audiences followed this structure.
Main Body
Pick 4 key stages of the Hero’s Journey
Each paragraph: Deal with one stage of the Hero’s Journey and describe it. Describe the scene and the LANGUAGE in the scene in detail. Explain how it shows this is the stage you have identified (e.g. how do we know Michael is crossing the threshold in the café scene?) Describe the impact of the stage of the narrative you have just described on the audience. Which audience groups would enjoy the scene? How would it make them feel? Would any of the groups you mentioned in your intro differentially decode this scene? Remember to talk about the mode of address.
Conclusion Summarise your argument. Reiterate the link between the narrative structure and the audience.
