Representations and Institutions Essay
Intro
Text ('Bowling for Columbine') Genre Purpose Institutions: outline what the main external and internal controls are Representations: Outline what the main stereotypes and non-stereotypes in the film.
Integration: Explain that these two key aspects are linked because the representations serve the purposes of the institutions. (E.g. in Bowling for Columbine, Michael Moore’s purpose is to persuade you that gun owners are insane and/or evil, thus this is how they are represented in the film. He wants to show the NRA and the political right as unsympathetic, thus this is how Charlton Heston is represented in the film. This links with his authority as the main internal institution, as he has both operational and allocative and operational control.)
Main Body
Each paragraph:
1. Explain one representation/stereotype used in the film and how it is established by language. Give very detailed, specific examples 2. Explain WHY Michael Moore wanted to represent the group/person/himself this way and how it fits with his purpose
For institutions, remember you need to explain in detail INTERNAL and EXTERNAL CONSTRAINTS and how these impact the text e.g. Law-Libel-uses cartoons and questions rather than making overt statements e.g. South Park style cartoon that heavily implies the NRA and the KKK are linked.
