Some Useful Terms:
Sentence structure-the order of the words in a sentence and the punctuation used.
List-a number of items grouped together separated by commas or semi-colons.
Series-another word for a list
Parallelism-parallel structure in sentence, when one sentence mirrors another in order or style or an idea is balance with a statement that is the opposite.
Climax/Anti-climax-where the emphasis or emotional intensity is placed, or if it is led up to but then disassembled.
Repetition-of words or clauses in sentences.
Expansion-development of an idea, especially in a clause.
Explanation-also in a clause, also used to develop on an idea.
Colon-introduces quotation or list; an explanation or an elaboration.
Semi-colon-finishes off one part of a sentence.
Short sentence-simple, no clauses
Minor sentence-no verb
Balance-similar to parallel structure.
Antithesis-placement of a word or sentence where it is at odds to the rest of the content. Contrast or opposition.
Parenthesis-an idea or clause, set off by dashes or ellipses that is not necessary information in the sentence.
Point of view-the perspective the text is written from-first, third, omnipotent or omniscient.
Triad-list of three that builds to a climax.
‘And’-used at the beginning of a sentence to give particular promise to the next idea.
Direct address-writer talks directly to his audience, as though in person.
Metaphor-comparison of two unlike things to create one idea.
Simile-comparison of two things using like or as.
Incongruity-when something does not fit.
Connotation-the indirect or suggested meaning of a word.
Hyperbole-deliberate exaggeration.
Root and extension-root is the literal or denotative meaning of the word and the extension is the connotational aspect of it.
Figurative-non-literal, the connotation or suggested meaning of a word.
