Josh Davis Critical essay practise 7. choose poem which deals with an important issue such as war, crime, poverty or racism. Explain how the poet deepens your understanding of the issue by the choice of content and the skilful use of poetic techniques. In the poem “In The Snack Bar” by Edwin Morgan, the poet deals with the issue of the way society looks at people who are elderly or disabled. Throughout the poem he describes how the old man is weak, blind, and vulnerable through his word choice he describes the appearance of the old manand the way society looks at him. In this essay I will write about how Edwin Morgan puts forth the issue of the old and vulnerable and how they are veiwd on society. The poem “In the Snack Bar” is set in a busy and crowded snack bar. The place is alive with people. One old man stands out in the bar, he is blind and crippled and has trouble moving. The old man asks the writer for help to going to the toilet and the writer helps him. Then the writer helps the old man to his bus. The poet uses word choice to show society as a hostle environment for the old man. The wroter uses alliteration “cup capsizes” the sharp C gives it an edge. The writer describes the sounds in the snack bar as being dangerous and hostile. Attachments:
