Revision notes on At The Bar..
Character: Man in Denim-
qualities and quotes-
secretive- "Man in Denim" criminal- "Nasty hard","Broad pitted face framed in long black hair". takes himself seriously-"He took his pint like a penance". looking for a fight- "His eyes were a demonstration waiting to happen". attention seeker- "Kept glancing at the big man and seemed annoyed to get no reaction". someone who liked conflict- "Waiting to catch him at it".
Rafferty( 'the big man' )-
qualities and quotes-
quiet- "The eyes were preoccupied with the own thought", "Shook his head, took his time". physically imposing- "When the big man...". confident- "If hes lookin' for me the names Rafferty". behaves strangely- "Seemed uncertain about what to order", "He studies his change carefully", "Reading her like a novel".
Narrative Perspective-
"Prison the barman thought". "Someone the barman didn't like". These are all ways which show that the story is told from the barman's point of view.
"The barman felt as if he was pouring out the big mans blood". Here it is very clear that the barman doesn't know what will happen, neither do the readers.
"The retired school teacher was doing the times crossword, Did he ever finish it?". "That should be them til they went home for their tea". These quotes show that the barman knows his regular customers well.
"The barman noticed him more than he usually would". This is about the 'Big man', it shows the barman is not sure what to make of him/is by him. This means that we are asking questions too as we see things from the barman's point of view. We are wondering what will happen after the big mans arrival.
Setting-
"The pub was quiet". "The afternoon was boringly in place". These quotes show that the pub had a boring atmosphere.
"The silence prolonged itself like an empty street with a man at either end of it". This is too show how awkward it was between the two men.
