Basics of Debating
Debating Terminology
This House – This house is the term use to show what is being proposed for instance
“This house believes girls are better than boys” is equal to “We believe that girls are better than boys”.
The Proposition- Are the side which propose the motion an illustration of an opening phase would be as follows “This house would propose the motion that private schools are better than public schools” and then the proposition would state there case in favour of public school being better than private.
The Opposition- Are the side which apposes the motion their opening statement might ensue as “This house would apposes the motion that private schools are better than public schools”
The Motion – A motion is a phase or sentence which outlines and states the grounds of the debate. For example “This house would abolish the monarchy” the motion here explains that the debate regards the removal of the monarchy. The motion can be changed by the proposition only to clarify details e.g. “This house would abolish the monarchy in the UK” but if the Proposition defines the debate in terms in which I can not be debate and it is point to be so by the other team they will automatically lose the debate.
The Chairperson – Is the person who over see the debate: introduces the speakers making sure the debate happens fairly and that there is no cheating; they can provide questions in the floor debate if the audience do not respond, if the audience do respond the chair will choose members of the audience to speak.
Protected Time- Is the first minute in which the debater speaks and can not be interrupted by points of information. If points of information are given in this time the team will get marked down.
Points of Information- (POI) are points which can be made by the apposing team to the one speaking at that given moment . To give a point of information it must be in unprotected time and the person giving the point of information must stand up and say “Point of information” and then wait for a response from the person speaking which will ether by a “yes please” or a “ no thank you” . Points of information must be given in a debate. (POI) must not be longer than 15 seconds. Here is an example of a point of information: the debater speaking; “Private school receive more money so can afforded better equipment for their school” the person on the other team might (POI) them by saying “POI, many school do not have the expensive equipment in some areas of there circumlunar but perform better in exams so how can that be an indication of a better education” the person speaking would have to come up with a response for the (POI) fro example “I agree that in some areas of education more expensive equipment might not effect the educational value of a school despite this in other area it has a great impact so over all the better equipment will aid a better education.
The Timekeeper – Is the person who rings the bell to indicate when protected time is up and when they have minute left to speak.
Summary Speech- Is the speaker at the end of a debate in which the summary speaker recaps what happen in the debate and why the side has won. They can take information from the floor debate but can not introduce any new ideas not already mentioned in the floor debate or the debate itself.
Summary Speaker – Is the person who gives the summary speech.
Points of clash- Arguments in the debate which the teams have direct apposing points.
Rebuttal- When the apposing team point’s out where the last speakers is wrong by finding flaws in there arguments for instance the proposition might have exclaimed the point that “Animal test should be ban because is mostly used in make up so is harming animals just to provide a new foundation which is inhuman and unnecessary”. The opposition might rebut with “To rebut statements made by the proposition the majority of animal testing actually takes place in medical felsites in the development of new drugs which can safe lives” … so to rebut is to dispute the arguments already made by the apposing side.
