Hi folks
Here are the mini essay plans from today. The first can be used for any question on Gatsby's character or the novel's theme and the second can be used for any question on chp 7 as a key incident. You'd obviously have to make sure that you tied your points to the wording of that particular question.
Key points to include in any character or theme question
- setting in chp 1 = social class divide
- Gatsby's dream of Daisy in chp 1 - green light etc
- the Valley of Ashes in chp 2 & significance
- Gatsby's car and parties - overambition. AD not possible.
- Gatsby and Daisy's meeting in chp 5 and how this emphasises the likely failure of his dream
- the turning point/climax in chp 7: aristocracy's cruel treatment of lower classes, the car crash, Tom and Daisy's behaviour afterwards contrasted with Gatsby's
- Gatsby's death in chp 8: swimming pool, Tom's role in this, Dr T.J. Eckleburg symbol
- end of novel: how G is made sympathetic, comparison of his dream to original Dutch settlers, significance of final line
Choose a novel in which a confrontation between two characters is of central importance in the text.
Explain the circumstances of the confrontation and discuss its importance to your understanding of the novel as a whole.
Intro: T & G in chp 7 in hotel room is confrontation. T exposes G. G dream over. Reveals way aristocracy crush lower classes' dreams - theme. Crucial in making G sympathetic.
Context para
Section 1: setting in chp 1 and how shows social class divide. Tom dominance. G's dream - green light etc.
Section 2: chp 7. Pathetic fallacy - tension, Tom treatment of G, Daisy refuses to stand by G, car crash, G defending D afterwards. T & D protect themselves.
Section 3: G death in pool, N&T in NY - aristocracy selfishness, "boats against current" - G strives for dreams unlike aristocracy who just hold others back.
Thanks
