This scene follows a serious incident between the gaurds and a prisoner that may have had a detrimental effect on the relationships between Paul etc and the inmates.
There is a wide shot of Paul lying on the ground - this makes him look vulnerable.
Diegetic sound of Jon Coffey's voice saying that he needs to speak to Paul. At this stage we can't see him and the sound of his disembodied, booming voice could at this stage seem threatening.
Jon insists: "I need to see you boss. I need to talk to you." Extreme close of Paul's face, contorted in pain.
Switches to over the shoulder shot from behind Jon. The light inside his cell is very dark. The camera angle, which highlights Jon's height and hides his face, and the lighting create a slightly sinister atmosphere, so again we fear Paul may be in danger.
Del dialogue: "You no s'posed to do that!"
When Jon grabs Paul, the editing becomes very fast paced and suddenly we hear a nondescript nondiegetic sound effect. It is a piercing noise that sounds not unlike feedback (as in from an amplifier).
Our panic is increased by a shot of nearby prisoner, Del, screaming in terror.
The camera shifts focus to a high angle shot from above the cell. We can see Jon grabbing Paul and in shot is a lightbulb above their heads. The lightbulb starts to glow spontaneously. As it does so, a highpitched buzzing sound draws our attention to it. This is the first indication that Jon has supernatural powers or some kind of extra sensory perception.
The lightbulb draws the attention of both Paul and Del, whose facial expressions reveal that they suspect somethign very unusual is going on.
The light becomes extremely bright and explodes. As it does so a camera shot with a disorientating zooming effect on Paul highlights the sense of the supernatural.
