Commonality between ‘Aunt Julia’ and ‘Visting Hour’
Theme: Both are about bereavement and facing death Aunt Julia: The speaker copes with the loss of his beloved Aunt (also the death of the island way of life) Visiting Hour: The speaker deals with the death of a relative.
Tone: MacCaig uses a change of tone in both of these poems to have an emotional impact on the reader. Aunt Julia: The tone changes from admiration when he is describing her to one of anger and regret that she is gone and he was never able to communicate with her. This represents his regret about the loss of island culture. Visiting Hour: The tone changes from humour/nervousness to one of genuine sadness as he faces up to the inevitability of his relative’s death.
Structure: Both use free verse structure to allow the poet to explore the speaker’s complex emotions
