Scottish Context – the final question
The question is worth 8 marks – but you can break this down into 4 groups of 2. It’s asking you to show your knowledge and understanding of more than just the MacCaig poem that you have in front of you in the exam.
Step 1 - 2 marks Identify a common (or possible different) theme/idea in the MacCaig poems – the one you have in front of you and one or two of your own choosing. Choose another poem(s) that you can get a good comparison out of, and that you can remember quotes from. Outline these themes/ideas and how they occur i.e. give a brief background as to why these themes/ideas are present.
Step 2 - 2 marks Now focus on the poem in front of you. Choose a quote that explores an idea or feature of language So, •Quote •Show idea/feature of language and explain how it is working •Relate briefly back to main themes/ideas
Step 3 - 2 marks Now talk about the other poem(s) you’ve chosen to analyse. Select a quote and analyse the ideas or feature of language within it, relating back to themes and ideas you talked about before.
Step 4 - 2 marks Repeat Step 3 once more, or possibly twice if you want to cover your back.
